INTRO

We Are What We Consume

Our media habits are extensions of ourselves. The music we listen to, the movies we watch, the books we read: they all tell a story about who we are, and give others insights on our internal lives.

Technology today allows us to record, catalog, and curate our experiences, through music playlists, film reviews, and digital note-takers. However, between consumption data siloed within individual one particular application to tediously recording everything manually in one's desired method of note-taking, gaining a holistic understanding of your media consumption is time-consuming and inefficient. What if there was a platform where not only can all forms of media consumption be accurately documented, but does so automatically, in an intuitive, customizable experience?

RESEARCH

Nostalgia Has Gone Digital

With over two decades of digital history behind us, mobile technologies and social media have become archives of personal memories. Music and media are central to how we remember, understand, and share our personal histories—and technology has become the primary vehicle for engaging with these memories. Designing an interface that catalogs personal media and facilitates meaningful reflection has the potential to offer a deeply resonant and valuable user experience.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Finding The Gaps

By analyzing four competitors — Last.fm, Letterboxd, Pinterest, and Notion — I discovered clear market gaps Aulos is uniquely positioned to fill, most notably, the support for multiple media types, visual moodboarding, and chronological organization of media.

USER RESEARCH

Survey Analysis

My survey explored the 3 main problems that users face while tracking their media consumption: Tedium Commitment and Consistency Platform Overload. Media tracking is often a manual, time-consuming process and with busy schedules and competing responsibilities, users frequently cited a lack of time or mental bandwidth to track media consistently, even when they want to. Even worse, users have to juggle multiple apps to track different types of media leading to fragmented, overwhelming experience for media tracking.

Reducing Friction in Onboarding

Asking users to connect streaming platforms all at once can become a very time-consuming task. Based off user research, music and TV/film were the only categories that appeared consistently on participants’ monthly consumption habits. Thus, a more streamlined approach asks users to only select from these categories. Adding more platforms can always happen later.

Improving the “Create Board” Flow

During user testing, CTA’s such as “Add a Title” or “Add Media” were poorly positioned and it was unclear to users where to go next. To solve this problem, I took a more step by step approach, only asking users to complete one or two tasks at a time, before going to the next step.

DESIGN SYSTEM

Building With Scale In Mind

Design consistency was crucial in making Aulos a fluid experience; maintaining tokens and assets in an organized manner streamlined the roll out for updated UX and UI decisions. Here is an abridged version of the design system that was constantly iterated upon during the project.

OUTRO

Building In Lovable

To take this project out of spec, I decided to start building Aulos in Lovable to see how the experience can be translated into the real world. While the initial project primarily focused on media consumption documentation and analytics, there’s room for the concept to be taken into exciting new directions. If you’re interested in seeing my progress, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
