We Are What We Consume
We Are What We Consume
The ability for anyone with an internet connection to access any audio or visual media that humanity has ever produced is a gift, however the digital tools for documenting the media that speak to us are flawed. Not only is media curation siloed by singular categories but recording media consumption overtime is manual and time-consuming.
Aulos (OH-lohs) is a concept that serves as your all-in-one platform for documenting all forms of media consumption in an intuitive, customizable experience. Gone are the days of manually tracking everything you’ve ever listened to, watched, or read— by connecting all of your favorite media and streaming platforms to Aulos, the work is done for you.

Your Month in Media.
Skip the tedium of tracking all of the media you’ve consumed. Aulos generates a multimedia moodboard monthly, ready to refine and make your own.

Make It Your Own.
Go deeper with custom themed moodboards or personal leaderboards. Add images and notes to help you draw connections and personalize your experience.

See Your Habits Evolve.
Aulos logs your cross-platform media habits and gives you insights by comparing each month’s consumption. See what changed, what stuck, and what shaped your inner world.

PROTOTYPING WITH AI
Building With Cursor & Lovable
To take this project out of Figma, I’ve started building Aulos in Lovable and Cursor to see how the experience would translate into code. It’s been a very rewarding process pushing the boundaries of AI-assisted coding tools while also learning the fundamentals of frontend development along the way. If you’d like to learn about how the project is going, I’d love to hear from you.

PROBLEM SPACE
The Origin Story
The popularity of yearly recaps and media rating services reveals that millions of users deeply care about reflecting on their media consumption over time. Yet the platforms delivering these insights offer only fleeting, incomplete snapshots, leaving users without the tools to engage with their media history in a sustained, meaningful way.
As somebody who’s personally tracked all of the music they’ve ever listened to since 2012 in Google Docs, the manual effort is significant, but scrolling through my life in music has proven invaluable enough to justify the commitment. Recognizing this gap between desire and available tools, I set out to build a platform that automates media tracking across multiple categories while preserving the depth and personalization that makes documenting consumption worthwhile in the first place.

USER RESEARCH
Survey Analysis
My survey explored the 3 main problems that users face while tracking their media consumption: Tedium, Consistency, and Platform Overload. With busy schedules and competing responsibilities, users frequently cited a lack of time or mental bandwidth to track media consistently, even when they want to. Even worse, juggling multiple apps to stay updated leads to a fragmented, overwhelming experience.
By synthesizing these results, I hypothesized that automating as much of the documentation process as possible while still leaving room for customization and control would help users overcome the current challenges of media tracking.

USER TESTING
User Testing With Maze
After building a robust mid-fidelity prototype of Aulos in Figma, I asked returning survey participants to test core user flows including:
Onboarding
Creating a custom board
Finding the most played song of the month
Connecting an additional app inside Aulos
This first round of asynchronous testing revealed some very important insights on where to make improvements along the user journey.

ITERATIONS AFTER TESTING
Reducing Friction in Onboarding
The old onboarding flow took users through every media category, which could quickly become very overwhelming. To speed up the process, we decided to only focus on the two major media categories: Music and TV / Film. Users can always connect more platforms later inside the app.

ITERATIONS AFTER TESTING
Improving the "Create" Flow
During user testing, CTA’s such as “Add a Title” or “Add Media” were poorly positioned and it was unclear to users where to go next. To solve this problem, I took a more step by step approach, only asking users to complete one or two tasks at a time before going to the next step.

SUCCESS METRICS
Areas of Improvement
While Aulos is only a concept, it’s still important to consider metrics that would inform where to focus our design efforts as the platform grows. The following metrics will not only help ensure that users are getting the most out of the experience but also validate whether we are building features that foster ongoing engagement and user retention.

We Are What We Consume
Our media habits are extensions of ourselves. Technology today allows us to record, catalog, and curate our experiences, through music playlists, film reviews, and digital note-takers. However, given the current media-streaming landscape, gaining a holistic understanding of your media consumption is time-consuming and inefficient.
